DEFENDANT PLEADS GUILTY TO CRIMES AGAINST CHILDREN

Toms River, NJ – On Wednesday (2/18) defendant Marcelo Saavedra, 66, of South Toms River pled guilty before Judge Francis Hodgson to 2 counts of 1st degree Aggravated Sexual Assault. 

The prosecution led by Senior Assistant Prosecutor Terry Ann Linardakis is seeking 13 years in New Jersey State Prison with a No Early Release stipulation, Parole Supervision for Life, Megan’s Law Registration and Nicole’s Law (No contact with victim).  The defense is requesting 10 years in New Jersey State Prison (No Early Release Act applies).

The case involved sexual conduct with two minor victims on multiple occasions in Beachwood and South Toms River.   On 7/17/14, Ocean County Prosecutor Det. Thomas Tiernan, along with Beachwood Police Det. Sean Langan and South Toms River Police Det. William Kosh, arrested SAAVEDRA on charges of Aggravated Sexual Assault, Sexual Assault and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.  The two victims, ages 14 and 15, disclosed that the defendant sexually abused them and that the abuse began at the age of approximately 6 and continued for numerous years between 2004 and 2012. 

Saavedra has been continuously incarcerated since his arrest in July of 2014 in default of $300,000, no 10% cash bail set by Ocean County Superior Court Judge Francis Hodgson.  Sentencing will be scheduled after an AVENAL evaluation.
